My Role at i3

I am a catalyst with sound judgement.

 A catalyst.
   With sound judgement.
     Imagine. Innovate. Inspire.

I one, I too, I three

To know the Self, is a state of joy.
To brush away things, that might annoy.

To know the Self, is to understand "I".
 "I" - one - complete; in-action; say hi.

It's recursive by nature, as matter of fact.
One's Self knows the Self, and the mind can be hacked.

The limits dissolve, with clarity.
The function resolves, and "I" becomes "me".

"Me", and "I" too ; are the keys to aware.
In knowing the Self, we can live bare.

Here together now; You, I, and me.
Our journey shared. You, me, and I; three .

A Space for You

This was when I started to visualize what's possible here.

A space to express,
       and imagine,
        and strive;
A space to explore,
    and be welcome,
        and thrive.

If you build, or you make,
 if you're willing to try;
you're able to be able,
     and here you can fly.

To be around people,
       smarter than me;
it's such a delight,
 it fills me with glee,

I use my words, and my hands, and my mind.
I use respect and acceptance, to find:
 The joy in each effort.
 The joy in each try.
 The joy in each person.
 The joy in each "hi".

To just look around,
  and see and admire,
The effort worth making:
  a worthy desire.

For you - and for me,
                      and each one that tries,
This is the reason, β€”
                      this is the Why.

An Ode to i3

This was my phase 1 wiki commit.

David Smith,
        here to play,
Having fun,
        every day.

We try, and try,
 and think, and learn,
Toward satisfaction, we do yearn.

My Claims

People who have met me will know the first claims I make are:

1. "I intentionally offer you acceptance and respect." I declare this purposefully, because this is how I choose to live my life, with my own authority.

2. If I do something that you find unacceptable, I invite you to let me know so that I can receive your feedback calmly and with understanding. I do this so that I can go home knowing that everything went well; because if it hadn't gone well then at least there was a lower-barrier opportunity for criticism or boundary declaration to be well-received calmly. This is how I choose to live my life.

3. I offer you the assumption of operating in good-faith. I offer the most generous possible interpretation of your words and actions. If I don't understand, I will ask.

4. If I recognize you as a danger to my Self because your are operating in bad-faith, by malice or inability, I will distance myself from you; as one must provide acceptance and respect for the Self with priority. It would be a disrespect of my Self to ignore malice or underestimate the danger of bad-faith actors. This is acceptable, because it must be.

How To Onboard Yourself as a New Member

I am 4 weeks into being an i3 Member and have learned enough to find comfortable confident peace in which I am able to work.

I'm sharing my own insights here for the benefit of new members who may stumble across it.

  • This space is unique. Members self-select themselves to be in this space.
    • The members are as unique and diverse as the space is. Your understanding the diversity, breadth, and depth of the talents and interests of the members can serve as an inspiration and reference point for your own experience.

  • Knowing where things are and how things work is 80% of the effort of using the space effectively.
    • Look in cupboards. Open the drawers. Read the labels. See and understand what each tool does and how it works. Poke around and become familiar.

  • Learn. Understand. Take it in. Give yourself specific time and opportunity to witness the details of the space.
    • Look around: up, down, around, and into the corners. There is history in all of the creations, tools, assets, and documents. Human beings have carried the torch of this organization for many years, so that you can celebrate it with us now.

  • Do not be afraid of being a new member. New members must be afforded the benefit-of-the-doubt, and there is a learning curve to this unique space. You are invited. You are welcome.
    • Give yourself time to feel comfortable sharing the space effectively. This space is yours and ours to use and celebrate.

  • Read the wiki. A tremendous amount of effort has been put into the wiki. Get lost in it. Follow the links and keep learning.
    • The wiki serves as a mostly-canonical reference for the reality of the physical space, the people of the space, and the declared purpose of the space.
  • Read the slack history.
    • It will give you an idea of the method of discussion, the pace of discussion, and the pace of collaborative efforts.

  • Know your boundaries. Know your Self. Be confident and assertive with the boundaries you define for your Self. Know what is acceptable to you. Know what is unacceptable to you. Trust yourself.

  • Find a pace that is comfortable and acceptable to you. Be willing to be strong and strive toward success without dependency on others.

  • This space hosts self-selected members who are statistical outliers. We are each different in a beautiful way.

  • Understand that most people are operating in good-faith and have the ability to communicate in a non-violent way.
  • Understand that some people do not have the ability to communicate in a non-violent way; and it is not your responsibility or obligation to respond or validate passive-aggressive or destructive communication patterns.
    • Be able and willing to recognize if an interaction is unacceptable to you. Be able to have the courage and confidence to disengage and distance your Self from the interaction.
      • Not all unacceptable states require resolution.
      • Not all unacceptable states are resolvable.
  • Offer generous and kind interpretation while being willing to recognize bad-faith discourse. It does exist. Your ability to achieve must not be limited by any other; you are able.

  • The Organization is flat by design.
    • There are Members
    • There are Members who are Directors, who are elected for 2-year terms; half of the director positions are elected each year.
    • There are Members who are appointed by the Directors in the role of Officers (President, Treasurer, Secretary, etc.)
    • There are Members who are Zone Coordinators

  • Zone Coordinators are very important leaders of the organization. Know who each of the Zone Coordinators are. Read the page. Learn their names. They are the most responsive and vocal participants of the space. Most of them have been active in the organization for a long time. They will help you if they are able, or point you in the right direction. Help them if you are able. ZCs are contributing with great effort and intention.

Have fun! ❀️

Get to Know Me

My waking hours are "night time". I sleep during day and work during night. This is how I have always been my entire life. I wish I was not this way, but I am. I will typically wake up between 9P and 11P.

I queue my messages as drafts to send during more universally acceptable hours (8A).

I am different, as we all are. I look forward to witnessing the beauty in the ways you are different.

For many years I lived in darkness; in a way I would wish upon no other β€” but I did survive. Surviving the existential demand of that darkness required me to tear down everything I believed I knew, so I could rebuild my reality from a foundation of actuality I can trust without question. (e.g. I exist. I love. I have the authority to choose how I live.) I have considered the contrary to all of the truths I accept.

Arriving at my peace with my mind in-tact, my reason well-tested, and understanding more-complete, was the greatest challenge of my life. There will be no greater challenge. The rest of this experience is a gift I choose intentionally; on purpose. The shadow makes the light shine brighter.
