New Business

NOMcon 2018

  • Nation of Makers is a nationwide metwork of makerspaces and they're holding a convention this summer (June 9-10). Would be a great opportunity to network with other makerspaces outside of Michigan.
  • Who wants to go?
  • Tony is offering to go along with Matt C on behalf of i3 as board member and officer, but can't afford to pay for the travel.
  • Who wants to help fund it?
  • Already been some chat on Slack, and we need to make a decision ASAP.
  • Gary just had this discussion at the makerspace he hangs out at in Florida.
  • Matt C: When NOM kicked off Charlie went to their gathering and it was a great way to connect with other spaces.
  • The travel costs would be about $1600 for 2 people
  • Jody: since this has also been discussed in the #nomcon channel in Slack there are potentially others who are interested in going.
  • Jody is curious who here would be interested in going? A handful of people raised their hands.
  • Jody also would offer to chip in to help pay for those going.
  • Joseph suggests we table this discussion to the slack channel/mailing list to be voted on at the board meeting next week.
  • Leora asks if there's some clear way for people to contribute?
  • Jody: people can put money in an enveolope in the black box by the front door.
  • Tony: people can also email him at machineshop@i3detroit.org if they want to make contributions
  • David: If anyone has strong opionings either for or against using i3 general funds for this, please post in slack or message board@i3detroit.org as he is interested in feedback to factor in to voting on this at next week's board meeting.

Expansion

  • Jody: asks Vivian what the status of next door is
  • Vivian: The landlord has been hard to get a hold of and it's her impression, since its also time to sign a new lease and he hasn't pressed on that, that he's also waiting on next door to open up before we sign a new lease.
  • Tony suggests as this has stalled for a while, we should consider unfreezing spending and holding a budget meeting soon.
  • Jody: what are we hoping to get out of a budget meeting?
  • Tony: We haven't had a budget meeting since December 2016 and it would be good to take another look at that.
