About Me

I joined i3 officially in February 2023. Being new-er to the area, I thought the community would be a great way to make some new friends, and make some new things. Currently I'm in Fab Academy, a six month intensive spun out of Neil Gershenfeld's How to Make (almost) Anything class. Basically my dream Maker School, and the thing taking up most of time right now. In addition to my maker goals, I /{am}/{have}:

Personal Details

  • Arrived in Detroit in late 2021, after living in New York for a while
    • Before that lived in different parts of California, and still desperately crave midnight burritos
  • happy to have 2 senior pups waiting for me at home
    • rhodesian ridgeback / australian shepherd mixes, from the same liter
  • Extremely varied professional background, I've worked in a hospital, a kickstarter startup, a snarky internet tshirt company, and a motorcycle parts website.
    • The common theme was developing systems to make things work better/faster/stronger/daftpunker, but that wasn't in a single one of those job descriptions
  • Tend to be interested in almost anything (except country music); if you want to talk I'm keen on your interests

Skills

I'm broadly skilled at "systems efficiency" and logistics. Which is just a fancy way of saying I'm familiar with shipping, and have a knack for figuring out a way to do lots of types of things in a faster/lower-effort way that can be repeated a bunch. If you need help with these I'm happy to chime in.

I also have very hacky/quick-and-dirty skills at a broad category of things, and am happy help with those, but will defer to the wide swath of experts we have in our i3 community. If they're 3 feet away, and I'm 1 ft away, you should ask them. If I'm in the building and they're at home, I can definitely get you set until they get back to you on Slack. With probably 10 minutes to get (re)acquainted with:

  • Image editing
    • Never underestimate MS Paint
    • Photoshop and GIMP if I have to
  • basic scripting (definitely not Best Practices)
    • python
    • xml, html, css
    • pseudo-codes like AutoHotKey[1], Browser Macros[2]
  • General Windows issues. Not Sysadmin level stuff like Group Policy editing though
  • Surprisingly good google-fu.

Relevant Reading & Watching

I'm a sporadic reader, so this isn't to show off as much as a jumping off point for discussion. No guarantee I'm further than a chapter/section deep. I also don't endorse any political or other controversial views of authors, because I likely am ignorant.

Books and Essays

  • Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work, Mathew B. Crawford
  • Makers: The New Industrial Revolution, Chris Anderson
