Yes, backing sheet metal with scrap wood is an excellent idea. It gives more body to the piece, as well as something to clamp it to. It will cut down on the scythe occurrences.

Go slowly. Take your time, you have all day to drill that hole. Keep a light pressure on the drill. It beats all day in the ER.

Consider the speed of the drill. Slower is better with metal. (I sense a theme here) Drill speeds good for wood are bad for metal. It results in the burning of more drill bits. Items which cost money. Slow is really good on plastic as it prevents melting and clogging up the drill bit. (No, I have never seen that happen.)
