Welcome

Please leave the zone cleaner than you found it.(its rule #1 for a reason) Being able to find things again is important! If you bring it in, you take it back with you on your way out.

FYI: The zone is new and we are working as fast as we can to get equipment sorted here on this wiki. In general, if you cant find it here, message the zone slack and you will get a response pretty quickly. We appreciate the help from everyone who has contributed or continues to help now. From all of us in paint zone, thank you!


Paint Zone Rules

1: Leave the zone cleaner than you found it. All guns/equipment should be clean when you leave the space.

2: Read the coating instructions carefully. This will help you understand the specific safety precautions that are required for the type of product you are using.

3: Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes a respirator, gloves, goggles, and long sleeves when applicable.

4: Choose a well-ventilated area. If you are spraying indoors, use the booths and ensure ventilation is on. You may also want to open a window, feel free to do so as long as you shut it when done.

5: Do not have any open flames/heat sources near the spray paint or chemicals. The fumes are very flammable and could ignite a fire or possible explosion.

6: Do not puncture or incinerate a spray paint can. This could create a dangerous explosion.

7: Dispose of the spray paint can properly. When you are finished with the spray paint, remove the nozzle and dispose of the empty can in any trash bin.

8: Avoid contact with your skin and eyes. Do not ingest any of the spray products or chemicals. 

       Paint on skin: wash it off immediately with soap and water. 
       Paint in eyes: flush them with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention if desired/necessary.
       Powder on skin: wipes/washes off skin very easily without harm.
       Powder in eyes: flush them with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention if desired/necessary.


Disclaimer: No paid service is to be conducted in the paint zone. The zone is for i3 members/friends to learn and work on projects together, not to be run as an coating service for hire. It is expressly against the law due to the zoning of i3 Detroit. Examples of acceptable and unacceptable behavior:

  • Unacceptable – “I have access to an oven/spray booth and can powder coat that piece for $70”
  • Acceptable – “If you’d like to work on this piece together and learn how to paint/powder coat, we can do that in the paint zone”


Training

Please reach out to a zone coordinator or designated trainer to get training on any piece of equipment. You can also request general training to get more familiar with the zone and the products/chemicals/technology used within it. Below is a list of all the trained operators with their role and any special areas they have more knowledge in.

General tips and tricks videos for paint and powder coating:

Walk-up work

  • If the paint zone main booth is empty and the space is not reserved on the calendar, members can bring their projects in to work on them at will. Members with reservations have priority to use the space during their scheduled time, so if someone makes a reservation while you’re there and you haven’t reserved the space for yourself, you might need to stop your work to let them in.
    • Stopping a project is difficult with painting so make sure you check before any use. You must be able to start, finish and clean up before the reserved time slot begins.


Zone reservation

  • Allowable time blocks:
    • Normal project duration
      • Max number of hours at a time: 6
      • Reservation extensions can be submitted in the last hour of current reservation if time is still available.
      • Any one person may only have one current or future reservation at a time
    • Extended project duration
      • Requires zone coordinator prior approval, at least 1 week in advance.
      • Approval contingent on agreed upon plan for removal of unfinished project should it not be completed in the time allotted.

Cleaning/Leaving the area

Coating related tools are quite sensitive and proper maintenance is critical. Leaving paint in any gun will destroy it.


Paint/Powder related fluids/waste

  • If you bring it in, you take it back with you on your way out. Plan ahead to do so.
  • There will be no waste left in the paint zone. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Paint cans, Paint thinners/chemicals, sponges/rags, paper towels, mixing cups, newspaper, tape, etc.
  • Powder/Paint left in the area is considered free use unless otherwise noted. This includes anything left in the powder guns, although they should be cleaned prior to leaving.
  • No paint/powder related fluids of any kind are to be dumped on the ground, in floor drains, or in sink drains. If some fluid is spilled, clean it up immediately to prevent a slip hazard or chemical waste concern.

Unattended projects (not allowed)

  • A project may only be left unattended in the paint zone if you have an active reservation (which includes your name and contact information)
  • If your project is in the zone without an active reservation it needs to be removed. The process is as follows:
    • If contact information is posted, attempt to contact owner will be made
      • If owner responds they will be instructed to remove the project within two hours
      • If no response from owner within two hours, project will be moved to new area and owner alerted following the same method as to its new location.
    • If there is no contact information and no one returns to remove the project within 2 hours, it will be considered abandoned and placed in graveyard or trash.

Tool Loaning

At this time, there is no loaning program with any of the paint zone tools.

Tool Donations

Any tool you'd like to leave for paint zone use will go under i3's ownership and the donation will be permanent. This avoids losing resources i3 grows dependent on if members leave or request the item back.

  • To start this process, message the zone coordinators on slack with the item and follow the steps they provide.
    • In general, its helpful to include a picture of the tool, brief description of what it does and overall current condition of said tool.
