Hybrid Meeting Etiquette

  • Be excellent.
  • Attendance and voting can be found in the #meetings slack channel.
  • Please show up early if you are concerned about your audio.
  • If there is no one waiting to speak feel free to do so at the next opportunity.
  • If there is someone waiting to speak, please say that you are raising your hand in the google call chat. (This will be demonstrated)
  • Please refrain from other side conversations, these can be distracting for the rest of the meeting and make it difficult for the chair to keep track of what's going on.
  • If you're in the space remember that having a single person speaking at a time is helpful for those attending online.

Introductions

What does being excellent at i3 mean

An experienced member explains what being excellent at i3 means to them

  • Lew: Involves many things. Involves being kind to others in the space and being friendly. Have a warm and inviting community. Leave you r area better than you found it. If you're bale to help somebody please do that.
  • Jeff P: don't just leave a tool somewhere. Somebody left a mop. It's important to return tools in their place.

Experienced Members

  • Jeff P: Current media zone coordinator. Soon to be accompanies by a committee that will help lead things. Beieves this is the best structure vs ZCs.
  • Frank A: Been a member for 3 years. Very active in the wood shop. Also active in other area sin the space. On the board, VP membership and active in the CRM initiative.
  • Jan H: Coordinator of sewing room. We will have a new sewing room! Have a good team of people. Also co-cooroidinator of the craft zone. Has been a member of i3 for 10 years.

New Members & Guests

  • Elliot: Recent U of M grad. Like stop do woodworking and sewing, some screen printing, paper craft. Took tour 5 years ago but quickly went back to college but now he's a member here. A lot has changed in 5 years!

Show and Tell

  • Frank: We got an Avid CNC. We had a challenge with the dust collection. It was very easy to hit clamps, so Frank made a 3D printed clamp system so it doesn't matter if the machine hits it.
  • Matt: Screen sharing a video of his giant parade puppet. 12 ft tall puppet out of Bambu and gymnasium floor rubber. Mounted onto a hiking backpack which he strapped to himself so he put it on his knees. Operated the hands with his hands.
  • Lew: Leather wallet!

Old Business

  • One week left to vote in the board election. You should've received an email from Opavote to your email in the CRM. Please reach out to secretary@i3detroit.org if you didn't

Do we need to better describe disciplinary action ?

Added by Jeff Burdick.

Looking to discuss disciplinary action.

  • The only disciplinary methods in our standing rules are probation and banning
  • The rules do not describe responsibilities around equipment authorization
  • By extension, the rules do not describe the removal of authorization on equipment
  • Can members be banned from the use of a zone?
  • If a user is abusing a zone sufficiently to warrant banning from a zone, should we just extend that to probation or banning from the space?
  • Trying to see if there's a consensus in agreeing with what the board did in the Auto Zone: like a conditional zone ban.
  • Some members have been less than excellent in specific zones of the space. The standing rules are lacking. We can do probation and banning, that's pretty much it. Both are rather severe. Equipment authorization/de-authorization isn't in the rules.
  • People proposed maybe doing "chores" as a punishment or doing some kind of service to the space. The one downside brought up was that people should be doing that regardless.
    • People who have been un-excellent have "taken away" from the space, so they should give back to the space with service
    • Jeff: somebody in Richmond HackerVA was found to be drinking. The membership voted to ban the member (not at the board level). If you want to be allowed back in, you have to please your case and you have to be voted in. The person came back and apologized and then they were allowed back in and were a great member.
  • If you can't trust the person in a zone, they shouldn't be in the space. We could also temporarily make them not members anymore (i.e suspension).
