Hybrid Meeting Etiquette

  • Be excellent.
  • Attendance and voting can be found in the #meetings slack channel.
  • Please show up early if you are concerned about your audio.
  • If there is no one waiting to speak feel free to do so at the next opportunity.
  • If there is someone waiting to speak, please say that you are raising your hand in the google call chat. (This will be demonstrated)
  • Please refrain from other side conversations, these can be distracting for the rest of the meeting and make it difficult for the chair to keep track of what's going on.
  • If you're in the space remember that having a single person speaking at a time is helpful for those attending online.

Introductions

What does being excellent at i3 mean

An experienced member explains what being excellent at i3 means to them

  • AJ: Part of being excellent is letting people talk and expressing opinions and being respectful without interrupting them.

Experienced Members

  • Matt A: Started in 2011 (14 years. Been on the board a couple times. Is president. Has been ZoCo for a variety of zones. Created a puppet for Great Lakes Regional Burning Man!
  • Paul (inaudible): Been a member for many years. Started as unofficial official tour guide. Then became VPAC held util 20223-23, VP Membership, member advocate, probably missing one or two..
  • William: Member since long before covid but hasn't been around much. Looking forward to making cosplays.

New Members & Guests

  • Elizabeth: Just did orientation last Thursday. Looking forward to becoming member. Heard about i3 from somebody else who works at GM. Looks pretty awesome!
  • Murtada: Engineering background. Always been a jack of all trades. Dabbled in different hobbies. In a robot period - would like to get into CNC with some metal work. Not a member yet! Was just here for orientation
  • Jim: Just became a member today. Retired electrical computer engineer for the last 20 years. No specific projects, just joining too ee what he can contribute. Heard about i3 back in 2011. couldn't join then but joining now.
  • Susan: Did a tour of makers in Ann Arbor but it's far away so they recommended here. Does sewing. Would like to learn to weld!

Show and Tell

  • Paul L: Made a shirt! It has the i3 logo on it. You can use the embroidery machine. He also made a sock!
  • Paul A: Andrew you man and him have been working to get an AED in the space. It is in the box by the door! The door is alarmed. It will start a siren and lights. There is a key in there to deactivate it. If you hear the sound, that means somebody is having a heart attack and you should call 911. The AED is pretty intuitive. It has an indicator light (green means it's good, it does a monthly check). When you take it out of the pack, it has a lid. When you open the lid, it starts giving you instructions as to what to do. There are 2 pads with wires. If anybody's interested, they will go through more detailed processes later. It is replacing the old one that didn't work.
  • Jan: Working on the sewing zone wall. Using Kevin's watercolor painting

Old Business

  • Seeking an auto ZC
  • May need another coordinator for paint zone

Outstanding Action Items

New Business

Membership

  • Had some big surges through phase 1. 6-8 people last week. We onboarded 4 new people tonight. Lots of positive trends. In the process of implementing a new CRM. Will be mainly focused on getting people over first. Will be able to start mass migrations in early September. Stay tuned!
    • Other features: can book time on equipment like CNC
    • Your membership will be migrated, but you will need to redo your billing. All your user info will be ported straight over.
    • Storage plots will not be ported over. You won't lose your plot, but will need to be manually ported over.
  • Active paid non scholarship members: 205-210

Upcoming Election Info

  • (Secretary)
  • Info about the election can be found here: Election 2025
  • Nominations for BOD positions are now open. A spreadsheet will be updated periodically with confirmed nominations. Links can be found in the wiki page.
    • Please make sure to be checking your email in the CRM since that's where the ballots will be going and how you'd be contacted if you were nominated to be on the board
  • Trying to gauge interest for a casual/unofficial "meet and greet" with nominees? Perhaps August 19th before the board meeting - right at the end of nominations and before voting begins
    • How would we like this to be run? Prepared speeches, every nominee gets xxx mins, just meet and greet, or ??
    • Feedback: A Friday may be good. No overwhelming interest in an event, but may be able to use updated meeting schedule.
Timeline/Key Dates
  • Nominations period: July 27th until August 19th at 7:30pm ET. Please note: nominees will need to confirm their nomination before the voting period begins.
  • Voting period: August 20th at 12:01am until September 2nd at 11:59pm. Email announcement will be made around August 20th.
  • "Official" Election Date: September 2nd at 7:30pm

Proposals For Usage of Equipment Under the Influence

  • Is this enforceable?
  • how do you define under the influence? Maybe it's not necessary to do
  • Perhaps say how you people be disciplined (i.e probation)?
  • Say while visibly intoxicated? But this is included within "under the influence"

Original Language

Modify the standing rules as described below.

Under the section “Prohibited Activities” add the following wording below the last paragraph: “Operating any i3Detroit tools or equipment while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited. The consumption of drugs or alcohol during tool or equipment use is also strictly prohibited."

Updated Language

Update the “Safety” section of the standing rules with:

  1. Safety is the top responsibility of every member and guest.
  2. It is the responsibility of every member and guest to understand the safe use of any tool or equipment before using it.
  3. When using any equipment or work area, you are responsible for warning those around you of any safety considerations (such as fumes or flying chips).
  4. All pets must be on a leash and under the supervision of their guardian while at i3Detroit.
  5. Members must not engage in or allow unsafe practices by any guest or other member. Examples of unsafe practices include but are not limited to:
    1. Not using appropriate personal protective equipment. i3Detroit provides eye, ear, hand, head, and respiratory protection of many kinds for this reason.
    2. Operating equipment under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substance. The use of any substances that can alter or impair mental abilities (including but not limited to medications, drugs, and alcohol) can greatly increase the risk of injury.

Another Version of Updated Language

An alternative to the above proposal, because I don't think safety stuff should go in prohibited activities but instead be in the safety section.

Additionally I don't want to get into a situation where we are listing out specific ways you can't be safe in a way that implies anything not on that list is fine, which the above proposal does.

    2. Operating equipment under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substance. The use of any substances that can alter or impair mental abilities (including but not limited to medications, drugs, and alcohol) can greatly increase the risk of injury.
    3. Using tools unsafely such as wearing long sleeves while using a lathe

Additional Member Meetings

Proposal:
Modify member meeting schedule during August-November to the following:
  • August 5th at 7:30pm (as scheduled)
  • August 26th at 7:30pm
  • September 9th at 7:30pm
  • September 23rd at 7:30pm
  • October 14th at 7:30pm
  • October 28th at 7:30pm
  • November 11th at 7:30pm
  • November 25th at 7:30pm

For sake of clarity, the current meeting schedule would be replaced by this schedule. The regular meeting schedule will resume in December.
Context
This proposal is a temporary update to our member meeting schedule to better support activities during the busier fall season by giving us two member meetings a month on days that don't conflict with board meetings.

This update adds a meeting to the last week of August, doubles the meeting frequency to two meetings a month for Sep-Oct and moves them to the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. Everything returns to normal beginning in December

Storage Zone

  • Have approved an extension on a parking permit in Large Project Storage for Jeff L, for the motor he's working on. It expires August 18th
  • Have started process to clean up B-Side Mezzanine
    • Looking for helpers after meeting to move the TV, chain hoist, and car over to the Graveyard!

    • Assuming desktop drill press is intended for Glass Zone, so it will stay
    • Will be cleaning up the chairs and moving them to the area above B-side office / bathroom
  • Osama has permission to keep wood intended for workshops in the mezzanine. It will be labeled.
    • B-side Mezzanine will not be used for material storage except in special cases, like for workshops. Until I have it cleaned up and get a system in place, you must check with me before storing anything here. Anything I have not cleared is subject to removal.
  • New CRM has a more sophisticated system we can use for Storage! ✨
    • Working on testing it to see what we can do, and getting all our storage plots entered in
    • Some storage rules and the way things work may change as we determine what the new CRM allows. Rules will be adjusted to compliment the new system. Please keep this in mind as we're switching over.
