Basic Info
- Zone: Infrastructure Zone
- Coordinator: Evan Allen
- Square footage used: 0
Facilities Needs
- Power
- <power for air compressor>
- <power for network stuff and server>
- <potential power for heaters>
- <power for HVAC>
- Compressed Air
- Not Applicable (I supply it, none of my stuff uses it)
- Ventilation
- Most roof vents work and HVAC functional, bathroom vent non-functional and at least one roof vent also non-functional (need all working)
- Water - water heater and shop sink need it, sufficiently supplied
- Sewer - shop sink needs a drain (and has one)
- Lighting
- Lights over the sink, network hardware, and electrical panels
- Network/server space
- Switches and wireless is antiquated and if they fail parts are not readily available, upgrades needed to both wired and wireless networking
- Server use is adequate, no upgrades projected soon (again, I supply it)
- Gas - Heaters, HVAC, and hot water use it (all sufficient)
Environmental Needs
- AC - NO
- climate control - NO
- Heat – Only as much as the rest of the shop
- Acoustic Need - NO
- Noise Produced - YES (air compressor)
- Needs clean environment - NO
- Produces mess - NO
- Chemical hazards - NO
- PPE needed - NO
- Fire hazards - NO
Scope & Direction
- Scope
- To provide the needed backbone for all zones in the space. To make systems easier to use and maintain. To automate as much as possible for maintenance and daily use.
- Goals
- Primary: Have all tools provided with the needed resources to run.
- Secondary: Upgrade things that are insufficient or near failure.
- Tertiary: Create systems that require less user intervention to operate.
- Equipment, and how it fits into the scope
- Air compressor – provide everyone with clean, dry air
- Network equipment – Provide internet to anywhere in the space that needs it
- Heaters – keep people in the shop year-round working
- Shop sink – where things of reasonable size can be washed
- Server – Where zones can put servers they need (storage, running zone-specific software, security cameras)
- What should the zone NOT be used for?
- This zone is the definition of an enabler, it makes no judgments on you. (but no crypto-currency mining or distributed computing on the server please)
- Direction for 2016
- Expand the shop air line to a wider pipe, fix leaks
- Install some more power drops where requested
- Better grounding for the bigger tools
- Get better sump pumps (CNC zone one seems to have failed) and have backup power
- Utilize solar resources we have to supply backup DC power
- Shrink todo list
Interaction/Synergy with other zones - cross utilization of resources
- Compute zone – VMs run on HARDAC, use of terminal to check on the networked resources
- Fab Lab – VMs run on HARDAC, use of space under desk to store server equipment
- Everyone - uses power, air, network, etc...
Similar equipment in the space
- Sky zone - entire thing could reasonably be a subset of the infrastructure zone
Traffic
- Unique member usage – All of them
- Frequency/hours of use – Constantly
- Number of trainers - None
- Number of classes held – None
- Attendance at classes – None
Coolness
- External recognition – None
- Notable/documented projects made in the zone – None
- Maker Faire projects/Press – None
- Attractive for new members - NO
Self-sufficiency - Does the zone make enough in donations to support itself for new materials?
- No, the only consumables in this zone are covered in pot-lock and other budgeting
Major issues with zone operation
- Unused/underused equipment and why
- None
- Equipment with repeated downtime and why
- Ceiling vents - there was thought to be an insect nest, but it was a myth
- Other issues
- Tasks are actually pretty well defined to make the zone better, but hands are sometimes hard to find at the right times.
