To cover the cost of consumables/maintenance, please contribute when you use the Fab Lab equipment. Put monies into the wooden cash box.

Plastic for 3D printing is priced by gram or cubic centimeter of extruded plastic, or by milliliter of resin. Please include all the test extrusions and failed prints in your measurements.

The following list is an attempt to offer up suggestions of tasks that could be accomplished in the Fab Lab by people interested in helping out.

Feel free to take charge of one or more of these items as your time and expertise allow. If you have taken charge of a task, please put your name into the field next to the task.

Should you run out of time or ability to complete a task, make sure to post on the mailing list and "fail loudly". This ensures that task status is shared, and no task languishes in silent failure.

In equipment making a combined Category:Filament_Printer with common rules and instructions would reduce duplicate instructions and make them easer to reference; then put machine-specific stuff in the individual pages.

Important Notes

  • Please keep the door between the Fab Lab and the Commons area closed. Doing so will help ensure that the Fab Lab maintains a dry environment for the filament.

CO Alarm

There is a First Alert CO605 CO alarm in the lab on the west wall.

This unit was purchased with zone funds on 2015-10-04, and should last approximately 7 years. A reminder on the Google Calendar has been created to check it monthly (probably a good Potlock task at the very least), and a reminder to replace it is there as well on 2022-10-04. The unit is advertised to have a replacement reminder alarm built in as well, which will be 5 chirps per minute. The alarm also performs internal diagnostics; if it fails, it will signal it needs to be replaced by sounding 3 chirps per minute.

The unit contains a 9V Duracell MN1604 (standard 9V transistor battery) as a backup, and draws 0.09A at 120VAC in normal operation. The unit will begin to chirp once per minute if the battery requires replacement.

The unit must be tested periodically (reminder event in Google Calendar is set for monthly, but more often is OK). Press the Test/Silence button, and the unit should perform 5-6s of a repeating pattern of 4 beeps and a pause. If it does not perform this correctly, email the -announce list.

The red light visible through the face is the indication that all is well with the alarm, and will flash in time with all alerts.

If The Alarm Sounds

  1. Hit the Test/Silence button:
    • If the alarm repeats after approximately 4 minutes, proceed to Step 2.
  2. Check to see if there is an immediately-obvious source of CO:
    • Is there something on fire in the laser cutter?
    • Is the laser cutter exhaust fan not running?
    • Is there something burning in the convection oven?
    • Is the convection oven exhaust not open?
    • Is one of the 3D printers combusting?
  3. If you can identify an immediate threat, deal with it effectively and promptly:
    • Turn OFF the affected equipment.
    • Use the fire extinguisher, located near the CO alarm, if needed.
    • Turn ON the laser exhaust fan and open the laser cutter fully.
    • Open the doors to the lab and prop them.
    • Open the lab window.
    • Get a large fan and blow air from the office area through the lab into the shop area (diffusion is a big deal).
  4. If you cannot find a source, or you cannot deal with the source, move to fresh air quickly.
  5. Call the Ferndale fire department (+1 248-546-2512 or +1 248-546-2510 for non-emergencies, but 911 if you cannot get through there)
  6. Make a post to the -announce list detailing the full event as you understand it, with as many details as you have.
