- The Classroom can also be reserved for events (see below).
- The zone slogan is "OH YEAH! IT'S KOOL-AID MAN" as a reference to the Classroom Wall which existed when this room was the kitchen.

Classroom Reservations
Zone Coordinator Approval Required
- All Classroom reservations require the Classroom Zone Coordinator's pre-approval.
- If you wish to reserve the Classroom, contact the Classroom Zone Coordinator in Slack (either directly or in the #classroom channel).
- The decision to approve or deny a reservation rests with the Zone Coordinator's ultimate discretion.
Reservation Criteria

Examples of technical topics include use of tools, woodworking, bookbinding, etc. Also, events that directly support technical topics such as tool safety, or first aid kit reviews.
- Attendance Requirement: An event must have a good faith & reasonable expectation of multiple people in attendance. For newer meetings, trial periods may be granted to determine interest.
- These are general approval guidelines for a Classroom Reservation, however, the decision to approve or deny a reservation rests with the Zone Coordinator's ultimate discretion.
- Cancellation: The Classroom Zone Coordinator reserves the right to cancel a previously approved reservation at any time (For example, cancelling a reservation in favor of another event that has substantially more people.).
Calendar Requirement
- After a Classroom Reservation is approved, the event's organizer must post the event in i3's General Event Calendar ( https://www.i3detroit.org/wiki/Calendar ) to reserve the space.
- An event invite can emailed to "calendar at i3detroit.org" to create the event on the calendar.
- For each event in the Calendar, the word "Classroom" must be listed in the event's (1) Title; (2) Location; or (3) Description field to inform others.
- See also HOWTO Host an Event at i3Detroit.

Other Equipment
Tables and Chairs
Craft Room's Sewing Table / Fabric Cutting Table and Mat
- Currently out of order, see https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C50PG7T54/p1754087381469429 .
- The classroom currently (before Side B Expansion) shares space with the Craft Room and some of that zone's equipment resides in here too. Of particular note is the 8 ft. × 4 ft. Fabric Cutting Table and Mat attached to the north wall, mounted via a wench and pulley system.
- The classroom's White Board is attached to the bottom of this table. Usually this table is put away, leaving the white board exposed for its intended use.
- Use of this table / mat is discouraged for classroom activities outside of the scope and purview of Craft Room operations and its access and use is restricted. Mounting and putting away this special table requires training from Craft Room coordinators / wardens. See this equipment's page for more details.
- Sewing Zone Expansion - Per discussion with Sewing Zone Coordinators (Jan and Dave) on 6 May 2025 both in person and Slack [2], [3], [4] The Sewing Zone only intends to remove the cutting mat for their new zone. They will then leave the existing whiteboard and frame in the Classroom.
- This is a member maker project featuring an electronic view port iris that allows for viewing (or not) into the classroom. Currently out of order (See Below).
Power Strips
Circular Power Strips (Multiple) KMC Model 00505
- These are owned by SEMCO (SouthEastern Computing Organization) and are on loan to the classroom. They may not be removed from the classroom for any circumstance without either the express approval of SEMCO or classroom Zone Coordinator. There are labels on each power strip that describe this arrangment as posted in #classroom slack channel on 28 November 2024. See https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1732813985239299 .
Documentation
Wall signage for TV. (Open Document Format) (PDF - TBA)
Possible Future Classroom Improvements
(Note: These are possible improvements, but this list is not necessarily planned)
Acrylic Sign
- Add Magnetic Acrylic Signs Holder for Classroom.
Wall Mount
- Add hooks, cups, and storage to keep items off the tables (e.g. meeting cowbell, etc.)
White Board / Television Supplies
- Have a specialized storage cabinet for whiteboard (markers, microfiber, erasers) and television (cables, adapters, clickers, etc.) supplies.
Tables
- Black Tables for better alignment with room's color scheme.
Chairs
- Better labeling to identify Classroom Chairs.
Wall Electrical
- Re-Orientate the electrical outlets so that the holes are in the normal orientation. This will help with compatibility of wall adapters and reduce cable strain.
- Add electrical outlet strip on walls for users. Since all the tables are the same height, electrical outlet strips can be set at a uniform height.
Paint
- Ceiling Tiles: Repaint White for Aesthetics.
- Change Door Hinges to black to harmonize with paint.
- Change/paint wall plates black to harmonize with paint.
Acoustic Tiles
- To create better acoustic environment for presentations. Add acoustic tiles. Maybe have a sound dampening sliding curtain for hallway.
Door Stop
- Add door stop to East Door to prevent door slamming. Additional Magnets to keep door in place.
Whiteboard
- Repaint wooden frame to a matching color (Black?).
- Other ideas...
- Frosted White Glass Whiteboard?
- After Sewing Zone Remove Cutting Matt, remove Existing Frame and mount whiteboard closer so that whiteboard is flush with wall.
Maintenance
Medium Priority
Mini-Split Installation
- Existing A-Side Office HVAC is old and likely to fail, resulting in loss of air conditioning and heat to the Classroom.
- Two Mini-Splits are available to replace the A-Side HVAC, they're located in the hallway corridor (See https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1736362055789719 )
- Funding Proposal for Installation Costs are available here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SoE9XwRSNUvaNzuwMZEAxu6aa77lEcwKFXO
KZlUgorc/edit?usp=sharing .
- Most recent repair was replacement of a failing capacitor, completed 25 November 2025: See https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1765740209551749 .
- Air Conditioning Repair was completed May 2025: See https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C06J2UXHS/p1746556779896489 .
Ceiling
- Update 27 September 2025 - Light was remounted, but ceiling tile needs replacement [See: https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1759002641494739?thread_ts=1757880406.749439&cid=C0C0RBCKX ]
- Ceiling Tile - Replace Damaged Ceiling Tiles
- Ceiling Tile - Apply Mold Inhibitor
Caulk
- Add caulk to trim, especially lower trim, to prevent water ingress.
Floor
- Needs to be refinished to allow for better cleaning.
- Add Epoxy seal to floor (For example, see https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-EpoxyShield-240-oz-Dark-Gray-Gloss-2-5-Car-Garage-Floor-Kit-365186/314107181 )
- Funding Proposal applied for 16 December 2025 at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SoE9XwRSNUvaNzuwMZEAxu6aa77lEcwKFXO
KZlUgorc/edit?usp=sharing .
Low Priority
- Repair Door Iris. Wiring is probably bad due to cable strain; Original design did not have the electronics and associated cables securely mounted so failure is attributed to cable flex due to multiple door openings and closings.
- See Repair Attempts [ https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1759025734432089 ] , [ https://i3detroit.slack.com/archives/C0C0RBCKX/p1757718337617689 ]
Column
- Remove Rust & possibly repaint.
Ceiling Tiles
- Need to repainted and repaired
