Introduction
This zone is currently an amalgamation of existing parts of the space that now have a single point of contact. A result of this is that there is no picture of the zone that would not also include all the other zones as the power conduits themselves are managed by this zone even as they worm their way into every crack and crevice. Another aspect of this zone is that there is very little that needs to be centrally located here on the wiki, most of the items have their own page or subcategory and these will be cleaned up but generally left to themselves and links to them consolidated here.
One of the responsibilities of the Infrastructure Zone is maintaining the Security Cameras and approved reviewers thereof.

Legal limits
The question frequently comes up why we don't do certain things. The answer given is usually 'it's not allowed', 'fire marshall said', or 'against our certificate of occupancy'. All of these are bad answers. The real answers comes from code that is not cited in the terse answers that are used to shut down people trying to do cool things. This is where we can keep track of reasons why we can't do things with sources cited so we can know when we meet the requirements to do the cool things.
Fire code stuff
Fendale uses International Fire Code 2012 and Michigan Building Code 2015
The fire marshal can modify fire code "when there are practical difficulties in the way of carrying out the strict letter of the code; provided that the spirit of the code shall be observed, public safety secured, and substantial justice done."

Wood shop | If the woodshop area is 2500 square feet or larger it needs a sprinkler system. Sprinkler systems are expensive, you have to pull a permit to connect directly to the city water line and the permit alone is at least $15,000 depending on where you're connecting to and what other lines are around that you have to avoid. Quote is from Fire Marshall visit (July 9 2018) Note that the code only says this matters if we're fire group F-1, which would mean a bunch of other issue for us in terms of sprinklers and stuff unless we build that wall. |
2012 International Fire Code Section 903.2.4.1 | https://codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/IFC2012/chapter-9-fire-protection-systems |
Fire extinguishers | 75 feet of travel distance 30 feet of anything flammable. Code says it can be higher in some cases, but someone else will need to go understand the code - Flammables storage containers - Welding - Jewelry Placement: Easily accessible and marked well etc. Hangers: at least 4 inches off the floor, less than 5 feet. If over 40 pounds, less than 3.5 feet.

Ceiling level storage | no storage within 24 inches of the ceiling (not the metal joist, but the corrugated metal) | Fire Marshall visit (July 9 2018) | Unknown |
We cannot have open flames or do auto work | Our COO says we can't do auto work. We would like to be fire group F1-1 https://codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/IBC2012/chapter-3-use-and-occupancy-classification According to the international fire code, fire group F1-1 needs: https://codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/IFC2012/chapter-9-fire-protection-systems automatic sprinklers if - fire area exceeds 12,000 sq ft; 1115m^2 - woodworking in fire area over 2500 sq ft 232 m^2 - Combined fire areas in entire building, including mezzanines exceeds 24,000 sq ft 2230 m^2 smoke/heat removal - fire area more than 50,000 sq ft 4645 m^2 definitions: - fire wall: external wall - fire barrier: internal wall We need a fire barrier Fire barrier definition: international building code 707 https://codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/IBC2012/chapter-7-fire-and-smoke-protection-features Fire group f1-1 needs a 3 hour barrier, made of "materials permitted by the building type of construction" Openings can be less than 25% of the width of the wall Doors and stuff have code requirements interior exit passageway IBC 1023.3, not sure this is what we need - TODO: lookup the door in a fire barrier rules air ducts: IBC section 717.5.2 - We need "approved" fire dampers in the ducts unless - Penetrations are tested in accordance with ASTM E 119 or UL 263 as part of the fire-resistance-rated assembly. - Ducts are used as part of an approved smoke control system in accordance with Section 909 and where the use of a fire damper would interfere with the operation of a smoke control system. Eric Merrill talked to a previous fire marshal in 2011, who said that he would count the current wall as a fire barrier, but we would need to fire rate the windows up top and the doorways. The easiest way to do the top would be to build wood frames and put 2 layers of drywall over it. |

TODO List

The following list is an attempt to offer up suggestions of tasks that could be accomplished throughout the space by people interested in helping out.
Feel free to take charge of one or more of these items as your time and expertise allow. If you have taken charge of a task, please put your name into the field next to the task.
Should you run out of time or ability to complete a task, make sure to post on the mailing list and "fail loudly". This ensures that task status is shared, and no task languishes in silent failure.
General TODOs
Task Name | Description | Priority | Deadline | Champion |
---|---|---|---|---|
Front Door stop | Front door bangs on gas meters, attach a doorstop to the floor to prevent | 1 | Jake | |
Floor Leveling on B-side | Apply floor leveling compound to rough spots | 1 | ||
Front door replacement | Find a replacement door, probably frame, and install it | 2 | ||
Power Runs | Label all outlets with the panel and breaker that serves them | 2 | ||
floor smoothing in wood shop | needs real concrete | 2 | ||
floor smoothing by laser/vinyl | needs leveling compound, acid, whole nine yards | 2 | ||
Thermal Insulation | The space leaks some energy in winter, let's find some major leaks and get some solutions in place. Luckily some of our members have FLIRs. | 2 | ||
Conduit Labeling | Designate all conduits with the circuits contained therein, and "downstream" (toward-end-device) "flow" arrows. | 3 | ||
Roof vent | Wood shop vent needs one of the motors on the motor shelf near the bike zone to be installed. | 3 | ||
Floor pour in old cart storage | needs real concrete north of the treehouse stairs. | 3 | ||
hot water heater | look at securing north side to the wall | 3 | ||
Building ground | Tie all the breaker panels to the building beams for ground. Make sure the bus-bar is as well. | 5 | ||
West wing north vent fan wiring | The wire insulation is dead, and that entire area could use cleanup. | 6 | ||
Rewire old woodshop panel to go off main disconnect instead of from A SW panel | It used to be powered through the wall, but was split when A/B were seperated | 6 |
