Edge Lighting Workshop!

Looking for a fun and approachable electronics project?  Want to make crafty, attractive decorations in time for the holidays?  Then come to i3Detroit on Monday, December 20th for an edge lighting workshop with visiting writer and maker, Steve Hoefer!  The class will be held from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a $5 materials cost – tickets are limited.  Click Here to sign up at Eventbrite.

We are very excited to host Steve Hoefer for this workshop – a technologist, writer and contributor to both MAKE and CRAFT Magazines.  He is also a teacher and currently traveling the Midwest teaching crafty and hacker skills at interested hackerspaces.

More on the class, from Steve:

My current class for this tour is edge-lighting signs and holiday decorations. (Like these: http://flic.kr/p/8Z6pBL )  It’s a simple project that anyone can do, but it looks great and has a bunch of uses from decorations to displays for electronics projects.

Participants will get the supplies and skills to make at least three edge-lit pieces, learn how and why it works, and the basics of working with LEDs.  You need practically no prior experience with electronics and the class will last about 1 hour.

The class will cost $5 for materials, and if you can spare it, a recommended donation of $5 to i3Detroit.  See you there!

EL Wire Class – 12/10 @ 7pm

Do you know what EL Wire (Electroluminescent Wire) is?  If so, have you ever used it in a project?  If you answered no to any of these questions, you need to check out this class at i3 Detroit.

Matt Switlik will be teaching a class on how to use EL Wire in projects as well as walking everyone through a hands on demo of your very own light up hat.

The class will be taught on Friday December 10th, 2010 at 7pm.  There will be a material fee of $35 dollars for the hat kit which includes everything you need to make the hat.  If you would like to bring your own object to add EL Wire to the power supply will be $10 and the wire will be available in white (pictured on the left) and pink for $2 per foot.

Please RSVP with this link – http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1110943863

Detroit Urban Craft Fair – Featuring i3 Detroit

i3 Detroit is again lucky to be involved with the Detroit Urban Craft Fair for their 5th anniversary.  The event is this weekend at the Filmore in Downtown Detroit starting at 10a on Saturday (12/4) and 11a on Sunday (12/5).

Besides the many vendors selling unique and cool crafts, you will find i3 Detroit doing 2 Make N’ Takes for the fair.

Matt is doing a soft electronics project.  He is taking cowboy hats and outlining them in EL wire for that necessary accessory for your holiday party.  This is a hands on build and we will help you every step of the way.

Amy is doing a Scrabble tile jewelry project.  She will be taking everyday Scrabble tiles and crafting them in to unique jewelry for gifts or yourself.  This is a hands on build as well where she will guide you through the process.

Both projects have small fee but you get to take home your homemade craft.

i3 Detroit is also working on a top secret project that will be unveiled at the show.  Come check it out.  I promise, it will be worth it.

All Hands Active (our hackerspace friends to the West) will also be there with a cool soldering Make N’ Take.

2nd annual WinterLAN coming up: 1-15-11

Save the date! On January 15th,  i3 Detroit will be hosting the second annual i3 WinterLAN Social event, starting Saturday at noon and ending when the sun comes up on Sunday.

The event will be all about games – BYOC (Bring your own computer) gaming, Board gaming, and tabletop RPG.

The i3Detroit common space will be set up for computer gaming with plenty of power, tables, and chairs.  The loft will sport a projector hooked up for console gaming (Got a vintage console you can bring?).  Board games will take place in any of our multiple rooms.

If you have any kind of game people will enjoy, bring it, bring yourself, and bring your thirst for gaming.  See you then!

Tool Discs: The Ninjas of Linux (SEMCO Linux SIG)

Tuesday night at 6:45pm, join Mike and Michael and the rest of the SEMCO Linux SIG for a discussion of live Linux-based tool discs for a variety of purposes, including backup, system recovery, password management, forensics, anti-virus, and more.  Most of these discs are intended for use on both Linux and Windows systems. As Michael says, trying to fix Windows from within Windows is often like trying to do a valve job on an engine while it’s running–these discs allow users to “step outside” Windows to get under the hood. Specific CDs will be discussed and demonstrated.

The talk is open to all — SEMCO members, i3Detroit members, and neither!
