Contact Microphone Class – This Sunday @ 2p (3/6)

Join the members of the circuit-bent rock band CMKT 4 for a workshop on building your very own EconoMIC Bottle Cap Contact Microphone (from Creme DeMentia).  CMKT4 will show you how to solder up a piezo-electric pickup and house it sturdily in a recycled bottle-cap housing of their own design!  Stick around for a performance from the band as the tool-handle dip on your freshly built contact microphone dries.  Additional take-home kits and other surprises will be available, come build a mic and see and hear some of the circuit-bent instruments you’ve read about on www.GetLofi.com up close.  Bring your own instruments and objects to amplify!

The workshop is $15, additional kits will be on sale for $10, and we’ll have fully assembled mics in several varieties for sale as well.  We’ll have some other fun goodies also.  Interested onlookers are encouraged to donate if they don’t want to build a kit.

CMKT 4 are Austin Cliffe, Zach Adams, and Jeff Cox. The circuit-bent / rock trio has made it their mission to leave no hackerspace behind on their way to their next Maker Faire;  they want to bring new devices, sounds, and ideas to your town.  They are constantly working to make new and interesting devices and music.

You can find them at http://www.facebook.com/cmkt4, CMKT 4 will soon be joining Australian circuit-benders ToyDeath for a tour of the Midwest, see www.getlofi.com/toydeath for details.

Please bring your fee and kit money on the day of the event.

Flame Effects Class – RECAP

The Detroit Burner’s Flame Effects Class on Feb 5th-6th at i3 Detroit was a huge success.  We had over 40 people for the 2 day workshop with some driving from as far away as Utah.  The class was taught by Dave X & Eric “Propaniac” Smith.  They taught the group all about fire safety as well as the details of plumbing, electronics & fabrication for incorporating flame effects into your next project.  A huge thank you to the teachers, the Detroit Burners and the students.  Check out the video of their final project.  More clips to come as we edit and upload them.

Open Soda: Saturday 2pm

Yikes, that’s today!

Pop down to the space this afternoon and learn about flavorings, colorings, carbonation, and everything else that goes into making your own soda. Taught by our very own Bill Putt, this class will introduce you to the DIY version of a product many of us buy without ever thinking about making it ourselves! Spaces are limited so pre-registration is encouraged, but all are welcome to attend.

The space is currently offline.

Don’t worry, the building is still there!  And you’re welcome to visit.  But the twitterbot and spacephone both depend on the DSL connection, which has been down for a few days now.  It’s being worked on, they promise.

In the meantime, the best way to find out if people are around is probably to join the public mailing list, and say hi.  That’s probably a good thing to do anyway!
