Hands-on basic car maintenance and roadside skills: 5pm

Have you been watching that “roadside skills” entry creep up on our Google calendar? Did you catch the post on i3detroit-public two weeks ago, announcing the class? Did I fail to make a blog post giving advance notice to the general readership? Well, I know the answer to at least one of those questions.

But that’s okay, because registration for this one is optional. Just show up! We’ll poke holes in our practice tire, and then patch them. We’ll replace an aging battery and some windshield wipers. We’ll jack up a car and swap the spare tire onto it. We’ll practice with jumper cables, and tackle whatever other questions come up. Come to think of it, it’s time to replace my flares, and I’d have to dispose of the old ones…

As with all our classes, non-members are most welcome! Come to 1481 Wordsworth around 5:oo this evening, and we’ll get started!

Puppet-Making Workshop

Flint the Hand-and-Rod PuppetCome one and all, Muppet fans and Makers!  i3Detroit will be hosting a puppet-making worskshop for members and guests on Thursday, October 21st from 7 to 9 PM.

The workshop will show you how to use a pattern, basic sewing machine use, some sewing techniques to hide stitches, and how to create a puppet’s structure and features. The puppet design is a hand-and-rod style similar to a Muppet. Bring fabric if you have an idea you want to try, but lots of material will be on hand to get you started. There is no cost for this workshop, but we are suggesting a $10 donation to i3Detroit.

Come on down and join the fun!

ReMade: The Rebirth of the Maker Movement

Some great friends of ours in Chicago have set out on a mission to produce a documentary film over the next year that explores the maker and hackerspace movement that is currently taking place in America. They have started a kickstarter project to try and raise some funding to allow them to produce this documentary.

From their website:

We are currently filming a documentary that explores the state and direction of the Maker and Hackerspace movement in America. We’re visiting hackerspaces and makerspaces across the nation in an attempt to show the incredible innovation, creativity, struggles and triumphs that exemplify these spaces. Our goal is to help everyone understand what hackerspaces and makerspaces are doing, how they are doing it and how the Maker Movement is changing the world.”

We would like to help them make this possible so if you can lend a few bucks to support the cause you can donate here. You can also visit their website http://www.electromagnate.com/.

Open Shop: Tonight (10/15)

Are you curious what the crazy people at i3 Detroit do all day?  Ever seen one of our crazy contraptions at a faire or event and wonder what this group is all about?

Then come check out the place tonight.  We will be hosting open shop from 7p to 10p at our Ferndale, Mich. shop.

There should be a few members milling around and some actually using the mill.

All are welcome.  Bring a project to work on, help with one of ours or we can find something for you to make.

See you tonight!!

DIY Filmmaker Meetup: Tonight 7pm

The date is upon us! Anyone with an interest in do-it-yourself film or video production is invited to i3Detroit for our second DIY Filmmaker Meetup.

Be at 1481 Wordsworth tonight at 7:00, and meet peers, mentors, collaborators… Bring samples of your work and we’ll show ’em for the group!

Last time we did this, the talent exchange board was a big hit, with twentysome participants offering talent and connecting with collaborators. Bring business cards if you have ’em.

Also happening at the shop tonight: Needlecraft night, for members and guests interested in all forms of stitchery, knittery, and such. If you’re coming to next weeks puppetmaking workshop, this would be a good time to familiarize yourself with i3’s resources and experts in advance.
