PROPOSED 6/28/13

What we want a Warden to do

  • Be the Champion for the Zone.
  • Be the contact point/negotiator/approval for all equipment loans and donations intended to reside in the Zone. *Nothing is in the Zone except that which has been approved by the Warden.
  • Coordinate maintenance on the equipment in the zone.
  • Coordinate plans for Zone Growth and request resources from the Board when necessary.
  • Coordinate “neighbor issues” with neighboring zones.
  • Make training and orientation available to those who wish it.
  • Set all Zone Rules, including access to and training required for Zone equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory list of all items loaned/or i3-owned within the Zone on the wiki. And keep all tools marked, with Zone and owner.
  • Be the contact point for loaned equipment leaving the zone.
  • Coordinate making the zone useful, fun and safe for those who use it.

Office Details

  • Term for Warden is same as for Officers.
  • Wardens are being elected at the same time and in the same manner as Officers among the Voting Membership.
  • Wardens can resign at any time.
  • Wardens can be recalled at any time by a majority written (email) vote of the Voting Membership.

A very important part of being Warden is coordinating equipment maintenance. The rasion d'etre of a Zone is its equipment. The warden has to make sure they stay in the race. Even if you don't know HOW to service the gear, make sure you know how it is going to be serviced WHEN it breaks.

Another important task is Marking tools and keeping inventory. A lot of times tools get misfiled into another zone, where they languish because no one knows they are there. Mark the tool with the Zone Color and Zone Name and they will probably come home.

With many items being loaned to the Zone from members, which can be taken home by those members at their pleasure, make sure you know which items are owned by whom, and publish that information on the wiki early, so there are no misunderstandings two years from now when you are no longer Warden. No tool comes into the Zone without your permission. You are the Inventory Manager. You don't have to log all the tools. Make the loaner put the item and his/her ownership in the wiki. You can log the i3 owned items. If you are unsure of an items ownership, don't let it linger unresolved, post it in the Mailing List and give 30 days (or longer if you wish) for the owner to step forward. If no one does declare it on the list as now marked as owned by i3.

Wardens need to hold classes regularly, to make sure new members know the tools and understand how to use them safely. Once a month would be great.
